Dental implants were first developed about 50 years ago. Their use became mainstream in the United States about 30 years ago, and this has increased dramatically in the last 10 years.
There are literally dozens of different types of dental implants on the market and dozens of different implant companies in the U.S. Of these, only a few have a long track record of research and development and a documented high success rate of several decades
The implant company I exclusively work with is Straumann, which is the largest implant company in the world, and has decades of proven success. They have been on the cutting edge of research and development in this area for many years. In the last two years I have had the opportunity to be involved in a major research project with Straumann, which involves using a zirconium material for the implant, which is white in color, instead of the usual titanium, which is grey in color. This has already been shown to have cosmetic advantages in the upper anterior region of the mouth. It also provides a treatment option for patients with metal allergies.
The national 10 year failure rate for implants is about 10 percent. In the 24 years I have been using this brand of implant at my West Roxbury office, I have experienced a 10 year failure rate of about one percent. This is due to a combination of several factors besides using this well established implant brand. These include working with a very good implant surgeon, taking extensive continuing education on implants to always be on the cutting edge of developments in the field, and using a well established dental lab with decades of experience working with implants.
The field of implant dentistry will continue to evolve into the future. Treatments that were previously not thought possible have now become routine. My continued affiliation with Straumann will ensure that I will provide my patients with the best treatment options available, with a proven clinical track record of several decades. It will also ensure that I am able to provide my patients with the latest state of the art treatment into the future
